High upon my priority list before every long trip, and sometimes the shorter ones, is to pull out a state highway map and figure out what might be the best route. Very often the GPS and online mapping sites just don't give you that depth of data that a good old fashioned map can. It's possible to pick up an offcial state map at every visitor center, usually for free. But that doesn't help in the planning, does it? The links provided here have all been checked as of the last update. Each takes you immediately to the page of the official map vendor for that state. Sometimes the free paper map just isn't available, we have noticed that more and more states are moving to a paperless environment. If that's the case, you can at least download the .pdf file for planning and hope that you pass a visitor center as you enter the state.
