If you are not in good shape, expect to view Pinnacle Rock from the bottom. There are
nearly 200 very steep steps leading to the public viewing platform at the top and the effort
is really a hard workout. But that's not to say it isn't worthwhile . . . the view is just
beautiful, especially during the fall color season!
Add a WPA built shelter area from 1938, a great series of walkways extending over two
miles, trout fishing in
Jimmy Lewis Lake, and the possibility of a leisurely afternoon in the sun begins to form. The
shelter area accomodates up to 75 people, so this could be decent day trip gathering point
for riding groups - but be sure to reserve shelter use by contacting
WV Parks management.
The rock formation is sandstone and the surrounding elevation is 2,700 to 3,100 feet, located
on the west anticline of Black Oak Mountain. The
natural beauty of the road leading to Pinnacle Rock makes this trip something to savor. US-52
from the Bluefield north to Huntington is one of our Favorite Roads, about 150 two-lane miles of
steep grades, switchbacks, streams, and heavy forest. The route north of Pinancle Rock
can be a tricky ride for the
novice rider, so be sure to take your time and just enjoy the trip.
Have a safe trip!
