The newest memorial stands in front of the cemetery masoleum
All Wars Memorials
St Johns, Clinton County

"Dedicated to all Veterans through peace and war. Their memories will never die."

Yes, we all want to 'celebrate' and honor those that have died, but isn't it sad to walk into any cemetery with a military internment area and find a large number of 'Unknowns'? St Johns hosted a number of brigades that were forming up to march off to Civil War battlefields in 1861. Several of our soldiers died from communicable diseases before they even answered the first official muster, and dog tags were not part of the soliders kit yet...thus, they left this world as mysteries to both their families and their admirers.

The GAR memorial is dedicated as follows:

"Erected by the Soldiers and Sailors Association and citizens of Clinton County under the auspices of C.E. Grissom Post No. 156 GAR and Grissom W.R.C. No. 20 In Honor of The Union Volunteers"

The monuments here take many forms, even a sundial. The granite memorials here are not standing well against the environment, and many facets are fading quickly. Take a moment to sit at the bench and contemplate our lost sons . . .

A brand new memorial has recently been dedicated and sits are the brand new Clinton County courthouse, downtown. It will be photographed and cataloged soon.
