This fountain is the only monument of its' type commemorating the GAR

"In honor of the soldiers from Kent County"

This fountain was erected and dedicated in 1885 and is the only known fountain commemorating the Grand Army of the Republic. The multiple tiers and faces of the monument depict the faces of many Union generals and quote the political leaders of the era. The great battles are named and dated, and above all - the pride and reverence of the community is showcased for all to see and appreciate.

The Base Level - The circular base depicts faces of important generals and the numerous significant events that were once known by every child in elementary school, but are now mostly forgotten.

The Second Level - The fountain heads relate quotes of three US Presidents, and depict the Womans Mission of Mercy

The Third Level - The four faces show the dedication, GAR Veterans Ribbon, Union Eagle, and Seal of The State of Michigan.

The Top Level - The Union soldier is depicted "At Ease" and the pedestal names additional great battles that claimed so many lives.
