Greenville GAR Post 83 Memorial is highlighted by steps to a dais area and forms the shape of a cross. Six cannon balls originally mounted on the planter are now missing.
This is the original GAR memorial from the William Kent Post #83 of GAR. A later memorial, dedicated 18 years later, is located at Veterans Memorial Park. Daughters of Union Veterans are also remembered in the GAR Section (JL) of Pine Forest Cemetary.
Formed in 1882, GAR Post 83 was named for William A. Kent. Through the years more than 300 veterans joined the
membership roll, but by 1930 only three remained to close the post. One of the youngest members of the post, John Finch,
was Post Adjudent for 17 years.
He tried to enlist at ages 13 and 14 and finally put on the 'Blue' at age 16. In 1933 he was the last of the old
veterans still alive and still spry enough to praise the work of the W.R.C. chapter, whose women had worked so long
to bring even more honor to their men who had served.
