GAR Memorial
Tyden Park
Hastings, Barry County
An impressively tall monument greets park visitors
Dedicated to those who offered up their lives that the government of the people, by the people, and for the people
should not perish from this earth.
The Union, One and Inseperable"
1861 -1865
A large park reflects a large amount of community pride, and in 1889 the citizens of Hastings dedicated an impressive GAR monument to guard the entrace to Tyden Park, right on the river. The obelisk is about 30 feet tall with inscribed face that keep the memory of several large battles alive for those that know their American history.
Hastings claims to be one of the 100 best small towns of America. There are other memorials and parks in the area that lead the casual visitor to agree with the claim.
Probably the most impressive feature of the monument is the text, which so firmly states a sentiment that
Union and a Government of The People is why the young men of this area left to join Mr. Lincoln's Army.
