Some veterans may have been moved from another cemetery Civil War Veterans Burial Area
Maple Hill Cemetery
Charlotte, Eaton County
Many Civil War Veterans are buried here, and apparently some of them were moved from their original interment at another cemetery. The marker refers to these as "less fortunate" because Oak Hill was a county paupers field. Notice on the new monument that Sgt Francis Flaherty, USMC, Eaton County's first Medal of Honor winner is listed. I tried to research the other names, but found nothing.
Also take note that the preservation project was completed in 1998, exactly 100 years since the first GAR dedication appeared here. It is possible that some of the GAR materials at the courthouse and those here were once part of a single commemorative.
The bronze marker found here was placed as part of an Eagle Scout project by a young Charlotte scout. It's encouraging to see that young adults of Eaton County are involved in community history enough to recognize the contributions of those buried here and acknowledge them. It's also not a surprise that this youngster is the son of a local funeral director, and in the 10 years since this project started the Eagle Scout has completed college and has joined the family business - the fourth generation to serve the Charlotte and Eaton County area.
This cemetary is located at the very edge of Charlotte, at Interstate 69.
