Northstar was never a very large place, except in the hearts of those that left it to serve in far away places. This is an area of large farms and hard work. Of course, military service is something that comes with the territory. The memorial area is encompassed by burials of veterans, with room for many, many, more sons and daughters.
The flag does not fly every day here, largely because there is nobody to run the flag up and down the pole each morning and evening. It would be easy to criticize the township officials, or the cemetery sexton, for a lack of devotion; but these are practical people and those that served, and those that have died, are always in their thoughts - that's probably sufficient.
