Civil War monument placed without GAR affiliation?
Civil War Memorial
Gilmore Township Cemetery, Isabella County

"Erected by the Citizens of Gilmore
In memory of our Heroic Dead - 1896"

I visited this memorial on a warm spring day and nearly missed the monument. It is one of a few tall obelisks here and the inscription is so faded it's easy to pass it by.

The sexton was working in a corner of the cemetery and came to chat when he saw my camera come out of the case. He mentioned another old cemetery in the area that had a GAR marker, but the cemetery itself had been abandoned and was unkept by any unit of local government. He said that he tried to cut the grass there at least twice a year, just so it would not be completely reclaimed by the forest. Several times I tried to locate it, but failed. How did Peter, Paul, and Mary sing it? "Where have all the graveyards gone..."

Gilmore Township Cemetery is located on Vandecar Road just south of the Clare County line near Farwell.
