This is a beautiful statue, forged in Europe and erected by a proud chapter of the UDC. An angel holds up a fallen soldier and prepares to place a laurel wreath upon him. Notice the soldier retains a good grasp on his weapon. The sentiment does not serve a helping of grudged defiance, but rather it speaks about the WHY of the war in clearly understood phrases. Their fathers were not seeking glory, only a continuation of the liberty the founding fathers had provided through a revered document, The Constitution of The United States of America. The soldiers of the Confederacy lost their struggle but, through their devotion, they did achieve a great measure of respect.
A duplicate of this statute was erected in Baltimore, Maryland, the single difference being the soldier carries a furled flag, not a rifle. This monument was dedicated in the presence of Mrs. Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson and 162 surviving Rowan County CSA veterans.
