Lawrence County Veterans Square
Ironton Cemetery, US-40
Ironton, Muskingum County

"Veterans Square named in honor of all veterans of Lawrence County"

"Dedicated to perpetuate the memory of those who gave their lives in the Viet-Nam war and to honor those who served with the U.S. armed services 1964-1973"

"Erected April 21st, 1974 by the American Legion Ironton Post 433"

So many Medal of Honor awards are given not because of the aggressive nature or fierce actions of the winner - but rather the bravey and loyalty exhibited in an attempt to protect the soldiers or sailors comrades. That's the case with Sgt. Donald Russell Long, USA. He gave his life on June 30, 1966 in VietNam. Long left the protection of an armored personnel carrier in order to assist several wounded soldiers to safety. When an enemy grenade landed in the midst of the soldiers, Sgt Long did not hesitage to shield them from the blast by covering the grenade with his own body.
