I visited this memorial in the early evening of a weekend night. The area was very quiet and offered me an opportunity to ponder what the town may have been when the young men of this small town mustered to the call in 1861, 1898, 1917, 1941, and all of the other eras in our history. It's likely the physical characteristics of the place didn't change much in their absence, but their absence and the reason for it DID change the community in many lesser obvious ways.
