"Worse than death is to be forgotten

"In rememberance of those that have fallen in the War on Terrorisim"
This memorial grows frequently. With each casualty the depth of the grief for their loss and the respect for their sacrifice increases. As I began taking my photos a small pickup truck stopped across the street and a VietNam era veteran slowly walked across to the memorial plaze. He was obviously lost in remembrance, or maybe just catching up on a few names he may have missed since his last visit. A quiet hello and exchange of comments about the memorial area led to an hour long discussion on sacrifice, respect, and a government that may be out of touch with those that wander about these monumnents in search of some peace.
We entered as complete strangers with a few things in common and parted as friends bidding each farewell with wishes for a safe journey to our destinations. The fallen did not have their chance for that farewell moment. They did not have the opportunity to express their concern for their companions. That is left to us, those that pause to remember those we never met. We are tasked with the responsiblity to share their stories and protect their memory.
