Peary was a world renown explorer at the turn of the 20th century. His explorations of the northern polar ice cap and survey of possible sites for a canal at the istmus of Panama brought lots of attention himself and to the US Navy - in which he served for 30 years. This is a modest memorial in view of the accomplishments he achieved.
