Located in front of the Cherokee County Admin Bldg VFW Honor Rolls
US-29
Gaffney, Cherokee County
This presentation, in front of the Cherokee County administration building, was erected by the local VFW. Doubtless the original intent was to display the five service flags behind the American flag and the South Carolina state flag off to the side of the display. Somehow, if my assumptions are correct, the Coast Guard flag is no longer part of the display; its' place has been taken by the SC state flag and a POW flag flying where the state flag should be.
If that's not the case, and the Coast Guard flag was never intended for display, then we find another example of the ignorance of many who design local monuments about the role of the US Coast Guard and US Merchant Marine in the execution of American wars. The men whose names are found on this cenotaph know . . . but their voices have been lost.
