The courthouse was designed by the official Architect of The United States Confederate Soldiers Memorial
Lancaster, Lancaster County
Worthy, the Confederal Soldier to be hallowed and held in tender remembrance
Worthy, the fadeless fame which Lancaster's soldiers won in defending the Honor of The South, the Rights of The States,
the Liberties of The People, the Sentiments of The South, the Principles of The Union as they were handed down to them
by the Fathers of our common county"
"No county had more loyal sons
"Erected by the women of Lancaster County
"God holds the scales of justice,
No cause more nobler champions
No people bolder defenders
No principle truer martyrs
"
A.D. 1909
Under the auspices of the Lancaster Chapter U.D.C.
"
He will measure praise and blame,
and the South will stand the verdict
and will stand it without shame.
"
In our politically correct era some of the statements found on this monument may be considered offensive. But in the context of the era that these men fought and died they are simple reminders that the cause they fought for, what they believed to be the founding principles of states rights and self determination, were just. There is a measure of defiance here, but also the admonition that it isn't for us to judge the right and wrong of the conflict. Though the impetus of that Rebellion may now be tarnished and brought into doubt, the purpose of the monument is to remember the valor of the sons of Lancaster County - and THAT is a fine sentiment.
