Think 'Inside The Box'
Look closely at this page format. Notice that it is essentially laid out in a two column format. The left column is reserved for the publisher and contains site related graphics and advertising blocks. The right column, the really big one, is a white background box and is used for original content created by the publisher or provided by our writers. The black navigation bar is used by the publisher to move the reader around the site, but everything else within the box is under the control of the author.
Roads And Riders is intended as a web oriented compilation of authors writing motorcycle adventures, tour guides, still photo albums, and monographs on the joy of motorcycles. If you immediately grasped the meaning of 'monograph', or paused a moment to check a dictionary to confirm it, you probably are the talent we want - a writer that already knows about motorcycles and the English language. Congratulations, you met the first requirement on the way to obtaining your own column space.
Our writers submit on no particular schedule but their own and choose their own subject matter. The articles they have printed here may be hard edged opinions about a new motorcycle, a complex 'do it yourself' guide on dismounting and lubricating a final drive unit, or a dreamy reminiscence of an exciting day trip or weeks long two wheeled vacation. Some find it difficult to include photos with their text while others really don't have the knack for writing, but their photography skills would make Ansel Adams smile. As long as the work submitted is original, shows a reasonable level of talent, and doesn't carry hidden agendas to defame or impugn another person or firm there is a place for it here.
The writers found within Roads And Riders don't get rich from writing for us. In fact, we don't pay them. BUT, we do allow them to gain some income by thinking 'inside the box'. The first paragraph of this article explains it all; ". . . everything else within the box is under the control of the author." That means that YOU, the author, may determine how much you make from your writing and photography skills. We have an established rate card for advertisers. Our rates are not very expensive, just enough to pay our bills. The fees outlined on the rate card are for placements outside of the box and come directly to the publisher, but YOU may sell your own ad space WITHIN THE BOX.

Roads And Riders provides you the space within the box without charge as part of our committment to you and your quality submissions. We do, however, reserve the right to discontinue that commitment, and your column, without notice and without any right of appeal. Column submissions may be rejected outright, or returned to you for suggested revisions at the discretion of the publisher. We also reserve the right to reject sponsor placements as inappropriate or unwanted. That means you can't turn the the area inside the box into one big ad for porn, dubiously forumlated health products, or other items and events that are deemed to be contrary to the good nature and intent of the publisher.
If your sponsor wishes its advertising to be shown on our search engine results page display we will bill your sponsor directly. Upon payment of the established rate card fees we will pay you a commission of 40 percent. Standard block and banner ad placment commission would be $104 first year and $60 for renewals. You will be required to provide a verifiable tax id number and a 1099 will be issued at the end of the tax season.
If your sponsor doesn't want to participate in the block and banner ads outside of the box, but you need graphics assistance for something inside - we can provide that at $35 hourly. It's your choice and the sponsor is YOUR customer, not ours. We won't contact the sponsor directly unless you give your permission.
You may be a business owner yourself and choose to use the articles as a way to entice potential new customers to your shop. After all, our writers do display outstanding competence, compassion for fellow riders, and obvious technical skills. If that's the case, you are welcome to have the space under some slightly different terms. You will be charged a $75 annual fee for the column space plus $15 per article to cover our insertion costs, and no commissions will be paid for any advertising place outside the box.
Roads And Riders is building a real online magazine here, one that is respected for the quality of the content and the service it provides to readers. This is a professional effort and intended to reflect the professional skills of those that submit intellectual content. The site contents are protected under our basic copyrights as the publisher and our authors retain their individual copyrights. The fact that we select your submission for a one time shot should be considered a small feather in the cap. If we offer you continuing space 'within the box' that can be considered a resume item . . . and another way to create you own income opportunity.
I look forward to seeing your submission. It may be sent here, with photo and graphic attachments as neccessary.
Thanks,
Lee Wonnacott, Publisher
